Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ann Newman was born on 31 January 1862 in St Helier, Jersey in the Channel Islands – the daughter of William Newman, a fishmonger, and Mary Sampson.

Annie’s father died in 1871 and, in 1874, she emigrated to Otago on the Dunfillan with her mother, brother and sister.

Annie married Edmund Arundel, a painter, in 1890 and they had four children.

When Annie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Gordon Rd, Mosgiel near Dunedin.

Edmund died in 1917 and Annie died on 7 March 1937, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
