Annie Rowan was born about 1849 in Selkirkshire, Scotland, the daughter of John Rowan, a power loom manager, and Agnes Hardie. She emigrated to Otago with her family on the Nelson in 1874.
She married Peter Liston Brown, a carter, in 1875. They had seven children and lived in Mosgiel near Dunedin.
Peter died in 1919 and Annie died on 18 March 1924. They are buried together in the East Taieri Cemetery.
