Annie Alice Hubbard was born in 1871 in Kent, England – the daughter of Edward Hubbard, a sawyer, & Maria Daplyn.

She emigrated to Canterbury in 1873 on the Cardigan Castle with her parents & when Annie signed the suffrage petition she was living with her parents in King St, Dunedin.

She married John Elmer Downes, a carpenter, in 1898 & they had 4 sons.

They lived, at first, with Annie’s parents in Dunedin before they went to live in Auckland.

John died there in 1939 & Annie died on May 5th 1947, they are buried together in the Hillsborough Cemetery.
