Annie Hutt was born Ann Ward on 31 October 1841 to John Ward and Elizabeth Stanbridge at St Pancras, Middlesex, England and was baptised on 21 November 1841.

On 31 March 1865 she married Richard Hutt, son of Richard Hutt and Mary Archer at Cotton Street Chapel, Polar, London, England.  This was Richard’s second marriage as his first wife Emma Laysell died in the September Q 1864 in Poplar.  Richard was a Tailor by trade.

Ann, Richard and four children [Richard, Louis, Albert and Walter] came to New Zealand on the ship “Atrato” which departed Plymouth on 5 April 1874 and arrived in Canterbury on
20 June 1874.

Ann and Richard Hutt had eleven children; Richard William Hutt born 1866, Louis Arthur Hutt born 1868, Emma and Ann Hutt born 1869 died 1869, Albert Henry Hutt born 1871, Walter John Hutt born 1873, - all born in Poplar and Robert Hutt born 1875, Maude Ward Priscilla Hutt born 1877, Emily Jane Hutt born 1879, Hannah Mary Hutt born 1880 and Elizabeth Rachel May Hutt born 1882 all born in Waimate.

Richard William Hutt was a Borough Councillor 1905-1910, 1913-1915.  Richard William Hutt Jnr was also a Borough Councillor 1927 – 1929. 

Richard died on 7 July 1918 and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Methodist section, Plot 53. 

His obituary state that he was the “first to grow strawberries on a commercial scale”.

When Annie died on 30 September 1920 age 70 years, she was buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Methodist section, alongside Richard, in Plot 52.
