Annie Strachan was born on January 10th 1856 in Midlothian, Scotland – the daughter of, labourer, William Strachan & Margaret Ainslie. 

Her mother died in 1858 and sometime after this Annie emigrated to Otago with her father. She married, clerk, Robert Hay on July 25th 1873 in Dunedin and they had 5 children, 2 who died in infancy. They spent a few years in Australia in the 1880’s but returned to Dunedin in 1886 where Robert died in June. 

Annie remarried in 1890 to James Johnstone, a widower with 2 children. When she signed the suffrage petition they were living in Forth St, Linden in Roslyn. 

Annie died on September 19th 1933 in Dunedin – she is buried with Robert in the Northern Cemetery. James died in 1936 – he is buried in the East Taieri Cemetery.
