Annie Hogan was born about 1849 in Ireland. She emigrated to New Zealand where she married railway foreman James Kay in 1876.

They had eight children and when Annie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Union St, Dunedin.

They later moved to Oamaru where two of their children died.

They moved back to Dunedin where James died in 1918 and Annie died on 23 August 1938 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
