Ann Lucy Palmer was born in Little Warley, Essex – the daughter of Richard Palmer, a barrack sergeant, and Charlotte Levett.

She emigrated to Otago in 1873 on the Otago and she married Walter James Stewart, a gardener, in 1879.

They had 10 children and when Annie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Church St, Roslyn.

Annie died on 12 June 1922 and Walter died in 1942 – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
