Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Annie Maria Haydon was born about 1843 in County Carlow, Ireland.
She married James Daly, a police constable, in New Zealand in 1867, probably in Alexandra.
Their first son was born in 1869 when James was transferred to the Waitahuna district and a daughter was also born there. (See 62 Katie Daly) The family moved to Teviot then to Roxburgh in 1875. They had, by this time, three children when on 10 February their youngest son James died, aged 18 months.
One month later their oldest son, six-year-old John died when a river bank gave way and covered him with earth.
The family moved to Balclutha in 1877 when James received a promotion but 1878 found the family in Dunedin where James held the licence or the White Horse Hotel on the corner of George and Frederick Sts.
A further three children were born in Dunedin, two who died in infancy.
The family then had the Royal Exchange Hotel, the Shamrock Hotel and the Baldwin Hotel in Princes St.
James died at the Baldwin Hotel in 1888. Annie took over the running of the hotel for a short time before selling the business.
In 1892 Annie took over the Metrople Hotel in St Clair where she signed the suffrage petition.
She died on 2 April 1911 and is buried with James in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
