Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Annie Peebles was born about 1845 in Scotland.
She emigrated to New Zealand where, in March 1870 she gave birth to a daughter.
She married butcher Robert McGlashan later that year on 19 October in the Waihola Parish.
They had a further seven children, one who died in infancy.
In October 1885 they were living in Maori Hill when Annie was charged with slander. She alleged that her neighbour had deliberately set fire to a house and refused to apologise – she was fined 40s and costs.
Just two months later Annie’s home was totally destroyed by fire when clothes hanging in front of the range caught fire.
Annie signed the suffrage petition in Maori Hill.
She died on 5 June 1908 and Donald died in 1918 – they are both buried in the Northern Cemetery.
