Ann Evans was born about 1853 in Cranbrook, Kent, England – the daughter of John Evans, an agricultural labourer, and  Sarah Moore.

She married Charles William Obbard, a groom, in Cranbrook in 1872, they had two children before they emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the Gareloch.

They had a further two children after their arrival and when Ann signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Woodside in West Taieri.

Charles died at their home in 1909 and Annie died on 23 March 1929 at their daughter’s home in Mosgiel.

They are buried together in the West Taieri Cemetery.
