Biographical information provided by Fiona Oliver, Alexander Turnbull Library, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Annie Emily Qualtrough, born 4 September 1878, was one of the seven sisters (she had no brothers) and was raised on the family’s farms in the Waikato region. It was an isolated area, and the girls had to walk four miles to the schoolhouse at Kihikihi. With no boys in the family, Annie and her sisters did a lot of manual work on the farm. She married Matamata farmer Ernest Schwarz, a cousin of her sister Mary’s husband. She had two daughters, Lena and Elizabeth. She died on 22 January 1943.
