352 Annie Sarah CROFTS

CROFTS, Annie Sarah nee CHEESMAN was born in London in 1838, daughter of William Robert Cheesman and Mary Harston. When Annie was 18 she and two sisters immigrated to Australia. There she met Joseph Tring Crofts and they became engaged. He then came to the Otago goldfields and she returned to England via Panama and New York. When she returned to Australia they were married in Melbourne and then travelled to New Zealand. They settled in Queenstown where Joseph ran a General Store and later moved to Invercargill. At both of these places Annie and her family were very much involved with anything musical. She raised a family of eleven children and her obituary written in 1917 stated:

Mrs Crofts was a true lover of nature, passionately fond of flowers; indeed she possessed more than an amateur’s knowledge of horticulture. Her garden was always a sight to gladden the eyes of any florist and its beauty was due to her own untiring labour and patience. Thoroughly domestic, Mrs Crofts was a kind and helpful neighbour; a believer in old-fashioned home life; one who ‘looked well to the ways of her household’ and of whom it may indeed be said that “her children will rise up and call her blessed.”
