Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert
Ariadne Hay was born in 1869 in NZ daughter of Margaret Hay and an unknown father. It is likely Margaret was the daughter of David A and Sarah Hay who arrived, with their daughters, on the Bank of England, from Gravesend arrived at the Port of Auckland on 27 December 1855. When she was 14, in 1885, Ariadne was adopted by John Grange and his wife Henrietta nee Baylis. John Grange, of Mahurangi was married to Henrietta youngest daughter of the late G. C. Baylis, of Picton.
John Grange was one of three Scottish brothers, all sea captains, who bought land on the Mahurangi River, near Warkworth in the 1850s. John, Henrietta and Ariadne lived at Mahurangi for many years, their house was known as The Grange, and where Henrietta took in summer boarders at 18s a week. John Grange died in 1895 and Henrietta in 1902. The modern shopping centre in Warkworth is named The Grange, in remembrance of the family.
In 1900, Ariadne had a daughter, Muriel Stuart Grange (1900–1977) with the father named as Mr Sutherland. Then in 1906, Ariadne married to William Henry Green. The following year a son, Hugh Grange Green was born and died at five weeks. Another son was born in Arnard William Grange Green (1908–1969). The family lived in Warkworth where William H was a labourer. William died in 1950, aged 71. Ariadne lived on until she was 94-years-old and died in 1965. Her will left her estate equally between her children Arnard and Muriel (Mrs Bell). Ariadne was buried in Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland, with her husband, near her parents.
Ariadne is the niece of 378 Grace GRANGE
