Barbara Peterson was born on 25 November 1865 in Sandsting and Aithsting in the Shetland Islands – the daughter of James Peterson, a fisherman, and Catherine Henry.
Barbara emigrated to Otago in 1874 with her family on the Auckland and they settled in Dunedin.
She married baker, Peter Fraser, in 1885 and they had seven children.
When Barbara signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maryhill, Mornington.
Barbara died on 8 July 1941 and Peter died in 1953 – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
