She emigrated to Otago where she married, gardener and nurseryman, Harry Clarke, on 11 September 1889 at the Wesleyan parsonage in Dunedin. Harry was a widower with six children.
Barbara and Harry had a further five children and when she signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Opoho Road.
In 1910 Harry opened his own nursery at Burnside and after his retirement in 1918 they moved to St Clair.
Harry died in 1935 and Barbara died at her home on 9 September 1940, they were both cremated and their ashes were scattered.
