Barbara Tate was born c 1860 in Sunderland, Durham, the sixth child of Thomas and Barbara Tate. She married John William Lemmon, a carpenter, in 1879 and they then emigrated to New Zealand on the Famenoth, arriving in Auckland on September 10, 1879. They had at least five children. Her son John Lemmon served in the First World War. She lived at 25 Pompallier Terrace until her death in August 1943 at the age of 84.
