Barbara McDougall was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland on 1 April 1869 – the daughter of Malcolm McDougall, a coal miner, and Mary Hunter.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1875 on the Waimea and they settled at Saddle hill south of Dunedin.

Barbara married Thomas William Martin, a leather dresser, on 4 November 1891 in Green Island.

They had four children, two who died in infancy.

When Barbara signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Church St, Roslyn, she died on 9 June 1900 and is buried with her daughter in the Green Island Cemetery.

Thomas re-married in 1904 and had a further five children. He died in 1938 and is also buried in the Green Island Cemetery.
