Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Barbara McLeod was born about 1840 in Scotland and she arrived in New Zealand about 1870.
Barbara was married to William McLeod, an accountant. They had at least seven children and lived in Walker St, Dunedin. Barbara’s husband was the first secretary of the Dunedin Gaelic Society and he held the position for 30 years. When he died in 1911 the Society raised funds and erected a marble memorial on the family grave.
Barbara died on 21 June 1827, and at the next Gaelic Society meeting the chief called upon a piper to play a lament in her honour. She is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
