Berthe Kirstine Andreasdatter was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1848. The city was then called Christiania. She married her husband Antonius List, who was Danish, in the late 1860s, and moved to New Zealand some time before 1874. Two children were born in Norway, and the following three in New Zealand:
- Frederick Emil List
- Otto Egil Nekolai List
- Bertie Christi Audry List.
They also adopted a Māori boy who they named Christian ('Einar') Einer Sigur List.
Berthe anglicised her name to Bertha Christina Andrea.
Antonius worked as a labourer, and the family of seven lived in Hastings for many years. Other List relatives lived nearby.
Bertha died in 1922, shortly after her husband.
