Biographical information adapted by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Bertha Schroeder was born in 1872 in Australia. She was the daughter of German immigrant Frederick William Schroeder and Mary Ann Hughes. The Schroeders moved to New Zealand and Bertha spent her early childhood at various settlements around Southland and Stewart Island, where her father worked as a sailor and a saw miller and her mother was a Wesleyan Methodist.

At the age of 19, in 1892, Bertha Schroeder entered the Salvation Army Training Garrison in Christchurch to train as an officer. She devoted her life to social work and never married.

More information about Bertha Schroeder is available on her Te Ara biography.
