Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth/Bessie Muir was born on 27 September 1870 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of David Duncan Muir, a printer, and Elizabeth Ferguson. (See 55 Mrs Muir)

Bessie emigrated to New Zealand with her family about 1886 and settled in Dunedin.

When she signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Elm Row and Bessie was working as a dressmaker.

She did not marry and she moved to Balclutha with her parents in 1903.

Sometime after her parents’ deaths she moved back to Dunedin where she died on 24 December 1949.

She is buried with her parents in the Warepa Cemetery, South Otago.
