Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash for the He Tohu exhibition:

Betsy Batley was born in Ashfield, Suffolk, in 1836, and married Demosthenes Service, a carpenter, in 1860. They had at least five children, and migrated to New Zealand in 1875. They settled in Avenal, Invercargill, and when Demosthenes died suddenly in 1885 at only 44 years old, Betsy became the head of the household. She lived until the age of 91, dying in 1927 in Invercargill.
