Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash, Archives New Zealand, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Bridget Hands (nee Corboy) was born in about 1866, possibly outside of New Zealand. In 1891 at the age of about 25, she married Josiah Hands. They had two children, John and Rubina.

Josiah was a labourer and later a coal merchant, and Bridget worked in their home. Her mother-in-law Hannah lived with them. Their address was 18 High St, Rangiora.

Bridget’s son John died at the age of 25, two months after his wife. Bridget died shortly afterwards, aged 52.
