Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Catherine Joyce was born about 1834 in County Galway, Ireland.

She married farmer, Anthony Adams on 14 July 1851 in Roundstone Church and they had, at least, eight children.

In 1871 two of their daughters emigrated to New Zealand followed by a further three children in 1875.

Catherine and Anthony sailed in 1877 on the Wanganui with their three youngest children. They settled, at first, in Christchurch before moving to Greymouth where one of their sons was a schoolteacher.

When Catherine signed the suffrage petition she was in Greymouth running a boarding house.

Anthony died in 1893 – he is buried in the Karoro Cemetery.

Catherine moved back to Christchurch where she died on 11 August 1899 – she is buried in the Linwood Cemetery.
