Christina McKinlay Ireland was born on 6 May 1836 in Redgorton, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of David Ireland, a mason, and Isabella Campbell.
She married James Barclay on 21 June 1860 in Auchtergaven, Perthshire and later that year they emigrated to Otago on the Silistria.
They had six children, one who died in infancy, and when Christina signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Factory Rd, Mosgiel near Dunedin.
James died in 1900 and Christina died on 20 July 1915, they are buried in the family grave in the East Taieri Cemetery.
