Christiana Hustler was born in 1838 in Rodley, Yorkshire, England – the daughter of Benjamin Ellis, a cloth weaver, and Elizabeth Lister.
She married Ephraim Ellis, the manager of a woollen mill, in 1862 and they had four children.
In 1874 the family emigrated to Otago on the Surat, they settled in Dunedin and had a further two children after their arrival.
When Christiana signed the suffrage petition the family were living in David St, Kirkland Hill.
Christiana died on 5 March 1905 and Ephraim died in 1912, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
