Clara Abbey was born in 1841 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England - the daughter of John Coates Abbey, a farm bailiff, and Elizabeth Hood.
Clara married Frederick Humffray, a printer, in Victoria, Australia in 1859, and they had a daughter in 1860. Shortly after the family came to Dunedin, where Frederick worked as a compositor and printer. In 1881 Clara advertised in the newspaper for a housemaid for a small family.
Clara died on 9 December 1915 and Frederick died in 1927. They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
