She married John Hutton, a caulker also from Fifeshire, in Stockton, Yorkshire in 1869.

They had two daughters before they moved back to Scotland where their next two children were born.

In 1879 the family boarded the Invercargill bound for Otago. Their son Alexander was born on the voyage.

They settled in Dunedin where a further five children were born. When Catherine signed the suffrage petition they were living in Gladstone St, Belleknowes.

John died in 1904 and Catherine died at her home on October 6th 1929. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
