Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Catherine/Kate Jane Faulds was born in 1865 in New Zealand – the daughter of William Faulds, a farmer, and Jean Colquhoun.

Catherine became a pupil teacher at Green Island school in 1883 and, in 1890, she was teaching at Kawarau school.

She moved to Otokia school in 1890 and when she signed the suffrage she was with her family at Green Island Bush.

In 1894 Catherine transferred to Kakanui school which is possibly where she met her future husband James Falconer, a farmer.

They married on 29 October 1902 at Catherine’s home at Green Island.

They lived at All Day Bay, Kakanui and had two daughters.

Catherine died at Oamaru on 8 May 1926 and Thomas died at their daughter’s home in 1938 – they are buried together in the Maheno Cemetery.
