Clara Smith was born about 1857 – the youngest daughter of John Smith, a carpenter and undertaker, and Mary.

Clara married Charles William Kingsland, a bootmaker, at St John’s Church, Invercargill on 30 May 1878 and they had eight children.

When Clara signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Mary St, Invercargill.

In the 1910s they moved to Christchurch where Clara died on 11 June 1926.

Charles died in 1939 - they are buried together in the Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch.
