Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Catherine Mary Josey was born about 1838 in Hampshire, England.
She married Nathan Mines, a sawyer, in Berkshire in 1865 and they had six children before the family emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 on the Carisbrooke Castle.
Their two youngest children died on the journey from bronchitis and measles.
The family settled in Waimate in Canterbury and they had a further five children.
In the 1900s they moved to Feilding before moving, again, to Wellington in 1906.
Nathan died in Wellington Hospital in August 1914 and Catherine died at her daughter’s home later that year on 21 November – they are buried together in the Karori Cemetery.
