Catherine Place was born in 1837 in Yorkshire, England – the daughter of Thomas Place, a publican, and Margaret Harker.
She married John MacDonald, a pattern maker and widower, on 7 June 1861 in Edinburgh.
They do not appear to have had any children and they emigrated to New Zealand settling in Kakanui.
John’s brother and sister also emigrated and appear to arrived in the 1870s.
John died of senile dementia in Seacliff Asylum in 1888 and when Catherine signed the suffrage petition she was living in Roslyn, Dunedin.
She died on 10 December 1893 and is buried with John and his family in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
