Biographical information provided by Peter Gerrie for the He Tohu exhibition:

Amelia Catherine Neill (Minnie) was born to Catherine and Major Samuel Neill in Whanganui on 10 June 1865. Her parents had arrived in Whanganui three years earlier after Samuel had completed his service with Her Majesty’s 65th Regiment (The Royal Bengal Tigers). In Whanganui he joined the militia and rose to the rank of Major, becoming a respected figure in the town.

In May of 1882, when she was 17 years of age, Amelia was injured in a railway accident. She had gone to meet her mother off the train at the St John’s Hill Platform, where her gloved hand slipped off the hand rail of the moving train and she fell under the carriage. Luckily her injuries were less severe than first thought and she made a good recovery.

Later Amelia set up business as a Draper and she conducted her business, first in Whanganui, and later in Gisborne. She remained unmarried and died in Gisborne on 15 October 1949, aged 83.
