Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Caroline Selina Yorston was born about 1870 in New Zealand – the daughter of John Dass Yorston, a teacher, and Elizabeth Wood Johnston.

She grew up in St Bathans and she attended the Teacher’s Training College in Dunedin in the late 1880s.

Caroline taught at Tokomairiro School in Milton where she signed the suffrage petition. She later worked at Caversham and North East Valley Schools before her marriage on 28 March 1905 in Dunedin to George William Bowron.

Before her marriage she was 'presented by the staff and pupils of the school with a hot-water kettle, vinaigrette, and hairpin box as a wedding gift.'

Caroline and George had two sons and lived in Dunedin where George was a partner in the firm Guthrie and Bowron.

He died in 1935 in Dunedin and he was cremated.

Caroline moved to Waimate where her son was living, she died on 5 November 1953 and is buried in the Waimate Lawn Cemetery.
