Caroline Annie Stuart Garden MacLean was born in 1871 in New Zealand – the daughter of Fitzroy Charles Stuart MacLean, a clerk, and Margaret Mearns.
She grew up in Dunedin and when Caroline signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Cumberland St working as a tailoress.
Caroline had a daughter in 1899 and the following year, on 8 March, she married William Nutt.
They had a daughter in 1901 before William disappears from the records.
By the time Caroline’s mother died in 1909 Caroline was living as Mrs Robert Paul Crawford in Christchurch.
Caroline died on 11 May 1917 at her home in St Albans – she is buried in the Linwood Cemetery.
