Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Catherine Bergin was born on 6 March 1867 in County Carlow, Ireland – the eldest daughter of Patrick Bergin, a farmer, and Anne Fleming.

She emigrated to Auckland in 1884 on the Ruapehu and she married George Anderson, an engineer, on 18 April 1892 at St Benedict’s Church, Auckland.

They moved to Dunedin shortly after their marriage and when Catherine signed the suffrage petition they were living, either near or with, George’s family in Broad Bay on the Otago Peninsula. They had four children when George died in Christchurch in 1908.

Catherine died on 19 July 1955, she is buried with George in the Linwood Cemetery.
