Catherine Meek Hastie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 24 November 1847. She was eldest daughter of Alexander and Jean Hastie. Her parents immigrated to Dunedin in 1858 with their family of nine. Alexander Hastie and his sons carried on a cartage business in Dunedin and were contracted to the Dunedin Council for several major works. Alexander later retired to West Taieri leaving his businesses in Dunedin to his sons, Thomas and Alexander.
Catherine married John Brown, a miner and later a salesman traveller on 14th October 1871 in First Church Dunedin. They had five daughters and four sons born between 1872 and 1866.
Catherine’s husband John Brown died at his home in Cargill Road (now Hillside Road) in 1886. Their youngest child was only six weeks old at the time John died.
Catherine lived on for another 44 years and died on 26 January 1931 at 363 Cargill Road. She is buried with her husband at the Southern Cemetery.
