Catherine McAskill was born on 4 February 1856 in Barvas, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland – the daughter of John McAskill, a crofter, and Mary Martin.
She emigrated to New Zealand in 1887 with her sister Christina (See 30 Christina McAskill) on the Kaikoura.
Catherine married Herman Dodd, a 67-year-old widower, on 21 March 1893 and they had two children.
Herman died at their home in 1906 and Catherine died, also at home, on 11 June 1948.
They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
