Catherine Fairley was born in Port Chalmers, Otago in 1864 — the daughter of James Fairley, a shipwright, and Isabella Fergus.
She did not marry and she ran a refreshment rooms in Grey St, Port Chalmers during the 1890s and 1900s a photo of which can be seen here.
She also catered many private functions in Port Chalmers the food was 'everything that could be desired'.
Catherine died at Southmeyde Private Hospital on 26 September 1941, she was cremated and her ashes were scattered.
