Catherine Marshall Gardiner was born about 1854 in Kirknewton, Midlothian, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Gardiner and Agnes Fairley.

She emigrated to Otago with her family about 1860 and they settled in Dunedin.

When Catherine signed the suffrage petition they were living in Adam Street and she was working as a dressmaker.

She did not marry and she died at her home in Dunedin on 14 January 1949 – she is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
