Catherine Jane Maile was born in 1842 in Huntingdonshire, England – the daughter of John Maile, a farmer, and Susannah Thompson.
She married Richard Frederick Coleman, an ironmonger, in 1872 and shortly after they sailed for New Zealand.
They settled in Christchurch and had five children, one who died in infancy.
Richard died in 1884, he is buried in the Barbadoes Street Cemetery.
When Catherine signed the suffrage petition she was living at 26 Cramner Square, Christchurch.
She died on 11 July 1916 and is buried in the Linwood Cemetery.
