Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Catherine Hay was born about 1840, probably in Scotland.

She is possibly the Catherine Hay who arrived in 1863 as an assisted immigrant on the Victory.

Catherine married Thomas McLennan, a carpenter, in 1864 – they had no children and they lived at Broad Bay where Catherine signed the suffrage petition.

Thomas worked on the building of Lanarch’s Castle on the Otago Peninsula and they were both very active in the local Methodist Church.

Catherine died at her home on 6 May 1916 and Thomas died in 1923, they are buried together in the Broad Bay Cemetery.
