Catherine Birrell was born about 1852 in Scotland.
She emigrated to New Zealand about 1870 and married William Thomas Smith, a labourer, on 22 October 1875 in Dunedin.
They had six children, one who died in infancy, and when Catherine signed the suffrage petition they were living in Church St, Roslyn.
William died in 1911 and Catherine died on 21 September 1926, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
