Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Charlotte Solomon/Solomons was born in New Zealand in 1875, the eldest daughter of Emanuel Solomons, an importer, and Evalina Marks.
She married Henry Hart in Wellington in 1900 and they had two children. In 1906 Charlotte petitioned for a dissolution of her marriage.
Her husband was described as 'a very bad egg' who had recently been convicted of forgery. She had applied for a separation order shortly after her marriage.
Henry had been in gaol for most of their marriage. He had been associating with 'women of the lowest order' and there was evidence to prove this. He was also described as 'a great drunkard, very cruel, and a notorious liar'. The divorce was granted.
Charlotte died at Dunedin on 14 January 1911. She is buried in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin, with her son.
