Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Charlotte Ward was born in 1854 in Batley, Yorkshire – the daughter of John Ward, a corn miller, and Emma Willans.
She married Franklin Horn, a grocer, on 3 August 1880 in Batley and they had a daughter the following year.
In 1882 the family, accompanied by Franklin’s sister Selina, emigrated to Lyttleton on the Hurunui.
Franklin appears to have returned to Yorkshire and died there in 1883.
Charlotte had a son with John Teasdale, a miner, in 1888 – there is no record of their marriage.
When Charlotte signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Milton - John died there in 1912.
After John’s death Charlotte moved to Nelson where her daughter was living, she died at her daughter’s home on 13 August 1933 and she is buried in the Wakapuaka Cemetery.
