Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Christina Cross was born on 5 August 1858 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Cross, a seaman, and Jane Hay.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family about 1866 and she married William John Burk, a venetian blind manufacturer, on 12 January 1881 at Knox Church in Dunedin.

They had three children and when Christina signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Larkworthy St, Dunedin.

William was active in local body politics and served one term as Mayor of the St Kilda Borough.

In the 1920s the family moved to Petone where William died in 1936, he was cremated.

Christina died at her sister’s home in Christchurch on 25 May 1943, her place of burial is unknown.
