Christina (Christy) McTaggart was born about 1810 in Appin, Argyllshire, Scotland. She married John Fletcher, a shoemaker, on 26 December 1830 in Lismore, Argyllshire.
They had at least eight children before they emigrated to Otago in 1861 on the Pladda with seven of their children. Their married daughter, with her family, joined them a few years later.
The family settled first in Castle St before moving to Short St, off Hanover St.
John died in 1882. Christina continued to live in their home in Short St until her death, aged 90, on 14 January 1900. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
