Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Christina (Jina) Watson was born about 1852 in Glasgow, Scotland, daughter of William Watson. She arrived in New Zealand about 1878.
In New Zealand, she married George Liddle, a painter, on 3 January 1879 in Tapanui, Otago. They had five children. When she signed the suffrage petition, Christina was living in Russell St, Dunedin.
Her husband, George, appears to have had a drinking problem: in 1894 Christina applied for a prohibition order to stop George entering licenced premises. The order was granted.
By 1911 Christina and George seem to be living at separate addresses. When their daughter died in 1913, the death notice described her as the third daughter of Mrs G Liddle, Arthur St.
A George Liddle died in Christchurch Hospital in 1920. The newspaper stated that relatives were unknown and asked “Dunedin papers please copy”.
Christina died on 9 May 1924 at Goodall St, Dunedin. She is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery with her daughter.
