Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Christina Bain Moffat was born on 16 May 1853 in West Linton, Peebleshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Moffat, a farm labourer, and Marion Cairns.

She emigrated to Tasmania, Australia with her parents and two siblings in 1857 on the Forest Monarch. In 1862 the family sailed for Otago on the Sea Shell then journeyed from Dunedin to Kaihiku, in South Otago, in a sledge. They stayed there for a short time before they settled in Wairuna near Clinton.

Christina married Donald Alexander McLachlan, a farmer, on 20 August 1877 in Dunedin – they had seven children and lived near Clinton where Christina signed the suffrage petition.

Two of her sisters also signed the petition (See 110 Helen Garforth and 110 Alice Turnbull)

Christina died at her home on 2 April 1923 and Donald died in 1930, they are buried in the family grave in the Clinton Cemetery.
