Clara Carter McCaul (nee Potto) was born in Staffordshire, England around 1850. In 1876 she married Benjamin McCaul in Whanganui, a cab driver. Together they raised two sons and two daughters. Clara died in Wanganui on 1 February 1909, aged 59.
